Today, Humom and Sauerkraut and I attended the 2015 Animal Conference in Oklahoma City. It was a conference to benefit the welfare of animals, from a variety of fields and perspectives.  Hosted by the Kirkpatrick Foundation's Safe & Humane Initiative, the goal is to make Oklahoma the safest and most humane place to be an animal by 2032.  The conference brought together people from animal care, science, journalism, research, and sustainability efforts to focus on current topics of animal well-being.

Sauerkraut was invited by the Central Oklahoma Humane Society and the Bella Foundation as their celebrity guest in the Pop-up bookstore and Cat Cafe.  She received a warm, happy welcome from the attendees, and met a lot of great folks, including the KOCO News 5 team.

To celebrate the event, Sauerkraut began selling t-shirts, and now has a store OPEN FOR BUSINESS! Please feel free to visit the store and pick up a t-shirt in one of her favorite styles!

Sauerkraut spent most of the event happily lounging in her pink cat stroller, getting petted, posed with, and adored.  I think the only thing that Sauerkraut wasn't too excited about was when some people thought it would be fun to photograph her with a... you know, a dog.  She got a little scowly at that.

Congratulations to the Kirkpatrick Foundation, the Bella Foundation, the Central Oklahoma Humane Society, and all the others responsible for hosting this amazing event.  Day 1 was great, and she's already looking forward to Day 2 tomorrow!

Well... maybe if by "looking forward to" we mean "ready for more napping and adoration"......

There was a storm here tonight. I guess there was big hail, heavy winds, and tornados with minor injuries. I'm glad there are humans who keep me safe, because I needed my beauty rest.

Today, Animal Planet released the list of five finalists in their America's Next Cat Star search, and Sauerkraut is one of them!

So, what does Sauerkraut think? I sat down with the scowly stinker, and here's how the talk went:

Picture

Pops: So, Sauerkraut, you've been named a finalist in America's Next Cat Star search. What does this mean to you?

Sauerkraut: Isn't it feeding time?

P: No. You got fed an hour ago.

S: (silence)

P: Do you need me to repeat the question?

S: Do you need me to put another June bug in your shoe?

P: Listen here, kid. You know I love you to pieces, but it's not dinnertime yet. Answer the question.

S: Give me food or I'll hashtag you in my next post, and it won't be pretty.

P: (pause) ...Okay, I'll give you a treat, but not another full meal.

S: Deal. Now what was the question again?

P: America's Next Cat Star?

S: Oh, right, right. It means a lot. I'm honored to be chosen, and want to make sure I can tell as many humans as possible about the importance of volunteering, fostering, and adopting - especially adopting special-needs pets. Now... where's my treat?

P: Hold on, I'll go get a fresh bag. (reaches down to put on shoes, then stops) Uh, Sauerkraut... is that a June bug in my shoe?

S: ... Would you believe it just flew in from the Catio?

P: ...

S: And boy are its arms tired!

Dispatches from Pops: 10 Best Cats in the Media (and a Few Raspberries)

This morning, Sauerkraut and I were talking about some of her heroes, some cats that have been popular in the media and shared messages of courage, honor and achievement (her words), so we decided to list our favorite.

10. Casper the Commuting Cat - Sauerkraut says that if a cat can figure out how to walk through crowds of humans without getting its tail stepped on, and then how to buy a bus ticket, then it deserves to be in the top 10.

9. Keyboard Cat - because playing the piano takes years of dedication, hard work, and sitting through endless other cats pounding away poorly on the keyboard at grade school recitals.

8. Library cats - The relationship between cats and libraries dates back to ancient times when Herodotus described the existence of libraries in ancient Egyptian temples, and cats kept rats and mice from eating the valuable paper. You go, ancient forepawthers!

7. All Cats in the Internet Cat Video Festival - well, because cats on the internet are all awesome, right? #RhetoricalQuestions

6. Troll Cats (or trollnøste) - These are awesome, because who WOULDN'T want to be made of human hair, nails and wood shavings, then go steal milk from cows and cream from households?

5. Morris the Cat - The world's most finicky cat, Sauerkraut can associate with Morris as she is almost as finicky. Butter? Heck yeah she loves it. But buttery biscuits? Not so much.

4. Felix the Cat - "Felix" in Latin means Lucky, and that was one lucky cat, I tell you what.

3. Grumpy Cat - Tardar Sauce, the calico mix breed of internet and television fame, has made a name for herself by being just who the heck she is. There aren't many creatures walking the earth who are so skilled at being themselves that they can be grouchy all the time and still loved by everyone.

2. Mimsie the Cat - Mimsie is the lion that roars at the beginning of all Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer movies and television shows. That he's named "Mimsie the Cat" makes Sauerkraut aspire to have a roar that grand. Or any kind of meow that you can hear, for that matter.

1. Lil Bub - Sauerkraut loves Lil Bub because she is friendly, sweet, little, and loved by all. It makes Sauerkraut want to lose her snarky attitude. Okay, that's a lie - she'll never lose her snark.

And the not-so-great:

0. Garfield - The lasagna-loving feline gets equally positive and negative marks because although over-eating is a real problem for cats, Sauerkraut does love her brother The Brockstar who, shall we say, could stand to lose a few pounds.

-1. Bonsai Kitten - even though this isn't real, just the thought or a joke about growing a cat in a jar so it takes its shape just isn't funny.

Sauerkraut gives her paw of approval to this list!

As a very small cat, and having no opposable thumbs to work the mouse, I leave the blogging to Pops or Humom.
